Upper Canada or Lower Canada?

Lower, which is what Quebec used to be. I know it's 'higher up' on a map, but it's downstream on the lake and river system and was therefore lower than Ontario which was Upper Canada. The tip-off is the last sentence which translates as "they pay land rents to the seigneur", and that was the system used in Lower Canada/Quebec
