Which one is better, IP cameras for security or regular cameras hooked up to the PC and send images via PC?

Please elaborate the difference, the advantages, disadvantages and the trends when it comes to the difference on security cameras that have their own IP address and hooks up directly to the internet or the traditional ones that is hooked up to the PC with a special chip/board that directs images from multiple cameras into the internet?
